Selectmen's Minutes 01/07/04
January 7, 2004                         Board of Selectmen/Health
Gene Nelson, Frank G. Costa and Richard Hegeman were present at the regular scheduled meeting of the Board of Selectmen/Health.

The following warrants were approved for payment:
Warrant #28A-04         $  60,027.83    Warrant #28B-04 $  42,243.98
Warrant #28C-04         $    1,425.23   Warrant #28D-04 $    9,142.48
Warrant #28E-04         $           0.00

Motion made by Frank G. Costa and seconded by Richard Hegeman to approve the warrants.

The Board of Health signed the reasons voted to maintain our present perc rates for the Town of Dighton and not adopt the State’s rate for on-site disposal systems.  The vote was taken at the regular scheduled meeting of the selectmen on December 17, 2003.

Motion was made by Frank G. Costa and seconded by Richard Hegeman to allow businesses to open on Sundays and sell alcohol from noon to 11:00 p.m.   Following a discussion regarding the new law to sell alcohol on Sundays the board agreed that it would be left to the owners if they wished to open.

Motion was made by Frank G. Costa and seconded by Richard Hegeman to approve the bonding for all class II auto dealers as required by law.  Voted 3-0.

The selectmen once again reminded residents that we allow only one unregistered vehicle on all properties in town.

The board announced that the burning season would be from January 15, 2004 until April 30, 2004.  Permits may be obtained at the fire department on Main Street from Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The board voted to allow the fire department permission to dispose of one 1992 Ford Victoria with 300,000 miles on it with oil and gasoline leaks.  Motion by Frank G. Costa and seconded by Richard Hegeman to dispose of the vehicle.

The board held an interview with Shawn Patrick Cronin to become a reserve officer for the town of Dighton.  Mr. Cronin stated he has attended school for criminal justice and wants to help people in town.  He was born and raised in town and would like to work for the people of Dighton.  He has completed the academy training that is required to become a reserve officer.   Mr. Hegeman asked him if he is aware of the hours required to work for all reserve officer and he stated that would not be any problem.  He was informed that the board has concerns with how the reserve officers treat everyone in town while on duty.  Mr. Cronin was informed that the appointment would be for one year and he would serve at the pleasure of the board.  

Motion was made by Frank G. Costa and seconded by Richard Hegeman to appoint Shawn Cronin as a reserve officer for the town.   The board thanked him for attending their meeting and wished him the best.
